For 30 years, rich conservatives have shirked their social responsibilities by successfully demanding that the middle class pay proportionally more in taxes and receive less in benefits. The result is a country whose 21st century robber barons, the richest 1 percent, take home nearly a quarter of all American income, while median wages for workers have stagnated and poverty has increased. The co-chairmen of the deficit commission complied with demands from the wealthy by recommending the middle class bear the brunt of the cost of reducing the deficit.
